Hilton Hawaiian Village, Waikiki

Looking for a great family hotel or just a place to spend some much needed alone time, Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki is the place. This hotel has everything anyone would want from a Hawaiian vacation. Local food, bars, a luau, entertainment, a view of diamond head, multiple pools, surfing, boat tours, and the beach! Even so, exploring outside the hotel is a must when in the Aloha state, but the hotel is still a great place to stay.

This hotel has been featured in episodes of the new Hawaii Five-0, and is actually offering a package through December 2012, based on the popular series. The package includes a stay at the well known Rainbow Tower (one of 5 towers on the resort), 1st Season of the show on DVD, $50 credit for the Tropics Bar & Grill (which is highly recommended to eat and drink at, great blue hawaiians-right where the drink begin), and several other perks. For anyone who has watched the series, this package seems like the ultimate five-0 experience, and the show does a lot at this resort. So, if a fan of the show, definitely go for this package while available.

The Towers

There are 5 towers at the resort: Ali'i, Rainbow, Tapa, Kalia, and Diamond Head. Each tour is uniquely decorated and themed. For families, the Tapa tower is perfect. Tapa is the cloth that makes the Hawaii fashions (shirts, dresses). The tower is full of beautiful Tapa cloth and Polynesian decor. The rooms are wonderful, and it is also a great place for a conference.

The Rainbow Tower is the most popular tower of the five. The rooms in this tower feature spectacular ocean views, and wonderful views of Waikiki and Diamond Head. It is also very close to all the shops and eateries on the resort. It also features a great way to start the day by eating breakfast on the lanai. There is nothing like watching the morning sun while enjoying a delicious Hawaiian breakfast on the beach, and for dinner go inside to Bali Steak and Seafood.

For those looking for the ultimate experience and chance to enjoy their own private pool deck and bar, stay in the Ali'i Tower. Ali'i means royalty, and one definitely feels like royalty while receiving a massage on the private deck of the Ali'i Tower. The tower is great for couples, but kid friendly as well. It is also the location of Tropics Bar and Grill.

Kalia Tower is the first tower upon entering the resort. It may not be the Ali'i, but it is the home to the resort spa, shop, and a Starbucks. It is surrounded by calming waterfalls and tropical gardens, and offers a large amount of ocean view rooms. While staying in the tower, try to visit the Mandara spa. In fact, go ahead and spend half a day there. It is welcoming and offers guests a chance to just forget about everything and enjoy relaxation in Hawaii.

Diamond Head Tower is close to the Village gardens, wildlife, and pools. It offers a short walk to all the main pools, shops, and a Starbucks. Which is located in the tower.

Activities and Entertainment

As was mentioned, one could visit this resort and never leave it. The resort not only offers shows and numerous activities, it also offers a childcare (Camp Penguin) so parents can take a day to themselves.

The resort actually has a boat (which has been in Hawaii Five-0) called, Spirit of Aloha. The Spirit sets sail throughout the day. There are several adventures one could take upon this fun catamaran, including a firework sail (only on Fridays). Other adventures include, snorkeling and sunset. No matter which one is picked, one is sure to see wildlife in this area.

Of course, the number one thing anyone wants to experience when visiting the Aloha State is, a Luau! Hilton Hawaii's Luau has also been in episodes of Hawaii Five-0, and is one of the best in the islands. There is the cuisine, traditional dance and dress, story telling, music, and everything (including fire dancing) one would want or expect. It is a must see show (a preview of the luau and the Rainbow Revue, is offered each Friday at the pool beside the Ali'i Tower).
Another popular show is the Rockin Rainbow Revue, which is a tribute to everything Hawaiian. Including a tribute to the famous Hawaiian surfer, Duke Kahanamoku. There is also nightly entertainment around the resort at the Tapa bar and Tropic Bar and Grill, as well as weekly Friday night fireworks.

Also, ask about tours and other area events.

Shopping and Pools

Be aware, if something was forgotten for this once in a lifetime journey, there are convenient shops to purchase travel needs. From sun glasses to soap or towels, the resort has the guests covered. Even so, there is also exquisite jewelry and home decor available, along with delicious eats. A must stop shop is Hawaiian Cookie Company. The cookies are worth it! The company offers exotic island flavors and the cookies make great take home items.

Moana Quilts is also a wonderful shop. It features traditional, light and comforting Hawaiian quilts. The traditional design is breadfruit design, and like everything in this enchanted land, there is a story behind the design. From quilts and pillows, to handbags and wall hangings, this is another great take home item.

A great past time at the resort, besides shopping, is enjoying the many pools. There is one outside Tapa, Rainbow, and Ali'i Towers. All complete with a bar and lots of character. Of course, there is always the beach.

No matter what one decides to do, Hilton Hawaiian Village is a terrific place to stay and experience Hawaii. Aloha! Hang Loose, and enjoy some more pictures.

Kualoa Ranch

Looking for fun, culture, and adventure on Oahu? Try Kualoa Ranch. Walk where movies and television shows have been made, and continue to be made, take an adventurous ATV tour along the hilly terrain, or learn about legends and stories from time past. Kualoa Ranch is a great place to spend a day, whether it be spent learning about the environment and culture or being a little adventurous.

One of the main attractions to see while visiting is, China Man's Hat. This island sits off the shore of the mountain range, and is named as such for its shape. The beach area is a prime spot for picnics and gatherings, and like any holiday on the island, it gets crowded fast on the holidays.

The ranch has been the destination for movies, such as Jurassic Park and was used in Lost and now, Hawaii 5-0. One of the best tours, and one of two reasons many visit the ranch, is the horseback tour. It is a laid back tour experience. Riding on horseback through the mountain ranch, breathing in the Hawaiian sea breeze is a once in a lifetime experience that must be taken advantage of. They even offer "keiki" tours. Another plus for this kid friendly vacation spot.

For those wishing to learn the native dance of Hawaii, take some hula lessons. It's fun, relaxing, and really sets the mood for being in Hawaii. There are several other tours, and for those looking for a wedding venue, try Kualoa Ranch.

Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa

While living in Hawaii, I visited several hotels and stayed in two. One of which was the Waikiki Marriott. Often featured on shows such as, Wheel of Fortune, this hotel is a great place.

Taken on balcony of partial ocean view room

The hotel was affordable and welcoming. The spa is a great place to unwind and relax, after working out in the fitness center, and the pool is perfect for hanging out and listening to some Hawaiian or favorite tunes. Especially if swimming at night.

The resort has several restaurants, and D.K. Steakhouse is a must eat at place. Come dressed nice or come casual, but leave satisfied and happy. It is only open in the evening, and try to sit by the windows or on the terrace to view the spectacular Waikiki sunset. Whether ordering seafood, steak, or just an appetizer and drinks, it's all good.

Other places to eat include: Sensei seafood and sushi bar (also featuring Karaoke, which is great entertainment after 10), Arancino di Mare (Italian food), Kuhio Beach Grill, and the poolside Terrace. The poolside Terrace is a wonderful place to go for fun songs, drinks, good poolside food, and to make song requests. Kuhio Grill offers a nightly buffet, but we ate there for breakfast and it was fantastic. The omlets are totally worth splurging on, as well as the waffles and pancakes (then go work it off in the fitness center or by swimming and walking everywhere).

While visiting check out the shops. There is a really awesome shop with koa wood necklaces, and other authentic Hawaiian souvenirs (can't remember the name). When shopping in Hawaii, looking for authentic Hawaiian souvenirs, always check to see where the product is made. It's just a bit more fun to buy it and really know it was made in Hawaii and no where else.

There are other jewelry, clothes, and specialty shops. Also, take time to read about the history of Hawaii along the walls of the Arcade.

While there, ask about tours and specials that may be offered. The staff is extremely helpful. There are also surfing classes, scuba diving and water sports, Hawaiian craft courses and cultural events, and of course, hula.

Hanauma Bay: Great For Snorkeling!

Hanauma Bay is a great place to spend a few hours enjoying the ocean life of one of the most beautifully preserved coral reefs. For a scuba diver or snorkeler, this is a must see on a trip to Oahu.

Upon first arriving to Hawaii, our family journeyed from Kailua, and enjoyed one of the most beautiful coastal drives ever. Along the drive, there are several scenic stops (such as Halona Point and Blow Hole) and beaches. There is also a golf course, and Koko Head Regional Park.

Parking at the Bay is limited, so get there early if driving. Upon arriving, purchase a ticket (military discounts-military with proof of residency, and local discounts available), and enter in a small museum before watching a short movie about the Bay. The Bay is very special, and it is encouraged not to step on the coral or bother the area that has been preserved.

After taking the ride down to the bay, my husband immediately began snorkeling. One of the most memorable moments was a second trip, where we both saw a sea turtle (honu) and my husband swam along side it until it disappeared into darker water (pretty cool).

The beach is great for kids. The sand is cool, there is lots of shade, and food stands available. If one's wish is to experience some good snorkeling, go to Hanauma. It will not disappoint.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the pictures we took. As soon as I do, they will be on here.
Kailua Beach

Kailua, Hawaii is a great town for tourists and locals. It has some of the best eateries on the Island of Oahu, and it is the location of Famous Amos (where one might catch a glimpse of, he is in the shop often). If looking for a relaxed day on the beach, away from the city, and close to restaurants and shops, Kailua Town is the place.

This park is absolutely wonderful for families. A great spot to set up for those with young children is (almost) right across from Buzz's Original Steak House. There is an area used by kayakers and canoes (available to rent), where children can easily play in the water and even catch crabs. The water is usually calm, making it perfect for families to enjoy. Lifeguards are on duty.

If visiting during holidays, be sure to get to the park early for a prime picnic area. For those kayaking, there is a place to rent from and some small island to go to. The closest being, Barren Flat.

As far as food goes, if looking for a GREAT breakfast, go try Boots & Kimos or Cinnamons (two favorites). Another great chain on the islands (with awesome morning/brunch grub) is KOA Pancake House. The prices are good at all of these, and they are family friendly.

For lunch, try Buzz's Steak House for something close. For an authentic plate lunch, go to L&L. Also, go back to Cinnamon's, or try Hibachi or Crepes No Ka Oi. There are also good American, Italian, and Mexican fare. A favorite was always Fat Boys, The Shack (a must go to for lunch or dinner), and Teddy's Burgers. A favorite Mexican restaurant is, Mexico Lindo and Maui Tacos.

For dinner, there is a place down from the beach, not far from gate 2 of the Marine Corp Base Hawaii called, Pinky's. It is a bit pricey, but they do offer a wide variety and good food and atmosphere.

As far as shopping goes, there is a lot of little shops to enjoy. Be sure to check out some bakeries, such as Agnes Portugese Bake Shop (great place). Also, stop by Kalapawai Market for a sandwich, some coffee, or to shop.

Overall, this is a must visit for those looking for the laid back, easy going Hawaii experience.

Travel America

Travel America

America is an extremely diverse and adventurous country to explore. It is filled with National Parks, unique and historic cities, ghost towns, gorgeous beaches, and even theme parks. With so much to see, experience, and do, it is hard to decide what state or states to visit and what to do. Although, no matter which state one visits, it will offer an individualized look at what America is like.

States to Visit

Honestly, there is no one state not to visit. Different states and regions have their own traditions, foods, art, architecture, activities, and personalities. In order to really experience America, it would be great to visit states in every region of the country, or even every state. Even so, in many cases, that is not possible (for those who can do it, great). So, this blog and others to follow will focus on the places this blogger has been and can talk with some confidence on.

The states include:

Hawaii
California
Arizona
Nevada
New Mexico
Texas-the pan handle-great steak!
Oklahoma
Arkansas
Tennessee
North Carolina
Ohio
Kentucky
Indiana
Illinois
Pennsylvania
West Virginia
Virginia
Maryland
South Carolina
Georgia
Florida

After living in several states, and with a love for traveling the U.S., I have discovered a lot about America. I have also found many fun activities throughout the country. A personal favorite is hiking and running, some snorkeling, and hoping to add kayaking to that.

Hopefully the posts on these states will be helpful, and maybe introduce folks to a new discovery or adventure.
