Hanauma Bay: Great For Snorkeling!

Hanauma Bay is a great place to spend a few hours enjoying the ocean life of one of the most beautifully preserved coral reefs. For a scuba diver or snorkeler, this is a must see on a trip to Oahu.

Upon first arriving to Hawaii, our family journeyed from Kailua, and enjoyed one of the most beautiful coastal drives ever. Along the drive, there are several scenic stops (such as Halona Point and Blow Hole) and beaches. There is also a golf course, and Koko Head Regional Park.

Parking at the Bay is limited, so get there early if driving. Upon arriving, purchase a ticket (military discounts-military with proof of residency, and local discounts available), and enter in a small museum before watching a short movie about the Bay. The Bay is very special, and it is encouraged not to step on the coral or bother the area that has been preserved.

After taking the ride down to the bay, my husband immediately began snorkeling. One of the most memorable moments was a second trip, where we both saw a sea turtle (honu) and my husband swam along side it until it disappeared into darker water (pretty cool).

The beach is great for kids. The sand is cool, there is lots of shade, and food stands available. If one's wish is to experience some good snorkeling, go to Hanauma. It will not disappoint.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the pictures we took. As soon as I do, they will be on here.
